Dragons' Comeback Attempt Falls Short at Old Dominion

Norfolk, Va. - The Drexel women's lacrosse team mounted a furious second-half comeback at Old Dominion but was unable to overtake Old Dominion as the Monarchs held on for a 14-12 victory. Emily Hoesch led Drexel (7-3, 0-2 CAA) with four goals while Caroline Jacobs netted five for Old Dominion (4-4, 1-0 CAA). Old Dominion scored 14 goals on just 22 shots. The 14 goals were the most any Drexel opponent had scored on the Dragons.
Old Dominion started the game strong as the Monarchs scord four straight goals and held the Dragons scoreless for over 17 minutes. Finally Drexel broke through as Sarah Carter scored on a free-position shot with 12:25 remaining in the first half. Old Dominion kept up the pressure and scored four of the game's next five goals to give the Monarchs an 8-2 lead with two minutes remaining. Just before halftime, Drexel scored twice as Hoesch and then freshman Mariana Uribe tallied to pull the Dragons to 8-4.
In the second half Drexel maintained momentum as Hoesch and then Jessica Bill scored within the first three minutes. Old Dominion would score the next three goals to extend its lead to 11-6. Kerry Kelly ended the run with a goal with 17:51 remaining as Drexel looked to erase the Old Dominion lead. Drexel would score five more goals including Hoesch's final goal with 5:39 remaining that pulled Drexel within one at 13-12. Drexel would be unable to score the rest of the game while Jacobs netted her fifth goal to seal the win for the Monarchs.
Drexel outshot Old Dominion, 28-22, and picked up 16 groundballs to the Monarchs' 11. Both teams converted their free-position opportunities as the Dragons scored four of their six chances while Old Dominion failed just once in seven free-position shots. Prior to this game, Drexel's opponents had converted just seven of 35 free-position opportunities against the Dragons this season.
The Dragons will face William & Mary on Sunday, April 8 at 1 p.m. in another Colonial Athletic Association game.
